The purpose of this project is to expose students to a relevant real- world issue such as global warming while formulating ideas to possibly solve this problem. Therefore, in this PBL activity, students will develop a case study that "puts a human face" on the effects of global climate change on a particular community in Chicago, primarily their respective neighborhoods. Students will work in groups to discover cultural, economic, and natural features of their community as well as challenges presented by global climate change. Moving forward, each group will share their findings with the class and present several options for responding to Global climate changes within their individual communities. Lastly. students will formulate a public awareness campaign while simultaneously reflecting on the effects of global climate change in Chicago
The learning goals for this activity introduces students to challenges presented by global climate change at the local level. Through the investigation of the effects of global climate change within a particular community. My goal is that that students will gain an interest in examining, and working to mitigate, the effects of Global climate change within their own neighborhood. This PBL activity will cover both Common Core and NGSS standards. Specifically this activity, will engage students in civil discourse and communication that will ultimately lead to to more effective decisions, advances student literacy around sustainability issues while promoting creative visioning around sustainable futures.
